Worsley Alumina in Western Australia manages one of the world’s largest alumina refineries. The operation is a joint venture between BHP Billiton, Japan Alumina Associates (Australia) Pty Ltd and Sojitz Alumina Pty Ltd, of which Worsley Alumina manages. With an expected production capacity of 4.6 million tonnes, the refinery is expected to be one of the most productive in the world.As workers on these sites are in mine shafts for extended periods of time and face very demanding shifts, they require a lot of ice to maintain consistently cool drinks. It is estimated that ice usage per person on these sites was estimated to be around 1.5kg per day.
